The European white oak is the best timber to smoke/fume with ammonia in the vakuumsystem because of its very high content of tannin. The beautiful dark colour penetrates through and through the full thickness of the wooden board and gives this product its unique appearance. This old crafsmanship of smoked oak is already known for 100 years. There is a chemical process called plasticize.

Fumed oak reaches from dark brown to black-brown in various colour effects. Just like nature. The smell after the process will evaporate after kilning down to 8 % mc. Controlling the m/c is no more possible with electronic measurement, only the darr-methode gives the correct result. You can get this beautiful timber also with the certificate of the FSC® 100 %!

Thanks to the consequent drying of the fumed oak - with a residual moisture of 10 %, it is possible, to mostly eliminate the remaining ammoniac from the wood. At that point, the craftsman can start with the workmanship and gluing of the beautiful wood. The surface treatment with conventional oils and varnishes seals the pores completely. Therefore, smoked oak is usable in various fields of application. Nevertheless, please require information from your supplier for glue, oil ect. before using it with the smoked oak.

Even smoked oak beams penetrate deep into the wood and show up a colourful unique. The sapwood does not take the dark colour. The vacuum smoked timber is absolute resistant against light and ageing, rot, insects and funghi. Non of it will effect the smoked oak in long term. Consequently, black oak stays beautiful for a 100 years.

The depth of colour results from the tannic acid content of the oak. It is not the duration of the treatment that determines the intensity here. The long and therefore costly process of post-drying under vacuum is necessary to achieve an odourless product for all applications.
